Hiring for Heart & Skill in a Kid Biz
Hiring in a kid-serving business isn’t like hiring anywhere else. You’re not just looking for technical skill—you’re looking for people with the heart, patience, and passion to work with kids while carrying out your vision.
I made plenty of missteps early on. I thought experience alone was enough, or that enthusiasm could make up for lack of structure. What I’ve learned is that the right hire is a mix of both heart and skill.
Here’s how I approach it now:
Screen for values. Do they genuinely enjoy working with kids? Do they light up when they talk about learning?
Check for reliability. In this field, showing up consistently is everything.
Invest in training. Even the most seasoned educators benefit from clear expectations and support.
Retain through culture. I’ve found that regular feedback, collaboration, and celebrating small wins makes instructors feel part of something bigger.
Your people shape the experience kids and families have with your business. Hiring well is worth every ounce of energy you put into it.
